Breast Reduction: More than Size

When people think about breast reduction surgery, they often believe it is simply about
removing excess breast tissue. In reality, breast reduction is a procedure that involves
reshaping, lifting and repositioning the breasts, as well as reducing their size.

For women with larger or heavier breasts, the physical weight can sometimes contribute to
ongoing neck, shoulder and back discomfort. Bra straps may dig into the shoulders, and the
size and weight of the breasts can make exercise or certain activities uncomfortable. Some
women also experience skin irritation or rashes beneath the breasts or under the bra straps,
particularly in warmer weather.

For others, the concern may be more about proportion and changes that have occurred over
time. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes and ageing can cause the breasts to
become larger, heavier and saggy, changing both their shape and position.

Breast reduction is not only for women with very large breasts. The procedure may also be
considered when breasts have become heavier or more difficult to manage over time, or
when a patient feels their breast size and shape are out of proportion with the rest of their
body. The reasons for considering surgery are individual, and there is no single breast size
or shape that determines whether a reduction is appropriate.

During a breast reduction, Dr Safvat removes excess breast tissue and skin and reshapes
the remaining breast tissue. The procedure also provides a lift for breasts that have become
lower or sagging. The nipple and areola are repositioned higher on the breast, where
appropriate, to create a more natural position in relation to the new breast shape. Dr Safvat’s
aim is to create a breast shape and size that is appropriate for the individual patient and their
proportions.

The amount of tissue removed is carefully considered. Breast reduction is not necessarily
about achieving the smallest possible breast size. Factors such as the patient’s body
proportions, existing breast tissue, skin quality and the desired breast shape all play a role in
determining the appropriate amount of reduction for the best outcome.

The result is therefore not simply a smaller breast, but a lighter, reshaped and lifted breast.
For some women, this can address both the physical burden associated with breast size and
concerns about the shape and position of the breasts.

Dr Safvat performs breast reduction surgery regularly and takes the time to discuss the
appropriate size, shape and surgical approach with each patient. The consultation is an
opportunity to consider the individual’s concerns and expectations and determine what may
be achievable through surgery.
