Hand Surgery in Sydney and Southern Highlands, NSW
Our clinic is experienced in both surgical and non-surgical treatments for a variety of hand conditions, including:
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
This condition occurs when the median nerve in the wrist is compressed, leading to pain and impaired hand function. Carpal tunnel release is performed surgically however, there are some non-surgical options, depending on the severity of pain. Dr Safvat utilises minimally invasive surgical techniques aimed at relieving pressure on the nerve through the carpal tunnel release procedure.
Dupuytren’s Contracture
Characterised by the abnormal thickening of tissue beneath the skin of the palm and fingers, Dupuytren’s contracture can severely limit finger movement. Our specialist hand surgeon offers multiple treatment options for this condition, including skin grafting and collagenase injections. These treatments aim to restore finger mobility by releasing the tight bands of tissue responsible for the contracture, allowing for improved hand function.
Trigger Finger and Thumb
This condition causes the finger or thumb to catch or lock in a bent position, making it difficult to straighten. Most treatment options are non-surgical, however in severe cases, our clinic offers a surgical procedure called a trigger release which releases the tight sheath surrounding the affected tendon.
Ganglion Cysts
Ganglion cysts are non-cancerous fluid-filled sacs that often develop near the joints or tendons, causing pain or limiting movement. Surgical removal is only offered for large and troublesome cysts, as smaller ones tend to disappear or not cause any issues. There is also the option to have a steroid injection as a temporary alternative to surgery.
De Quervain’s Tendonitis
This condition involves inflammation of the tendons located on the thumb and side of the wrist, resulting in pain and swelling. It is first treated non-surgically by using a splint to rest the thumb and wrist and prescribing oral anti-inflammatory medication to reduce swelling around the tendons. In severe cases, or times when the condition does not respond to non-surgical treatments, our specialist will perform a surgical release of the tendon.
Cubital Tunnel Syndrome
Compression of the ulnar nerve at the elbow leads to symptoms such as numbness, tingling, and weakness in the hand and fingers. In cases where cubital tunnel syndrome is causing moderate to severe pain, Dr Safvat will perform a cubital tunnel release surgery to relieve the pressure. When the pain is extremely severe or for throwing athletes, the nerve will usually need to be surgically moved elsewhere in the elbow.
Acute Hand Injuries & Trauma
Comprehensive care for acute hand injuries encompasses a range of treatments aimed at achieving precise reconstruction and rehabilitation. Surgical interventions may include fracture fixation, joint stabilisation, tendon repair, and nerve repair, depending on the nature and severity of the injury. Dr Safvat prioritises restoring normal hand anatomy and function through meticulous surgical techniques, followed by tailored rehabilitation programs to optimise recovery and regain functionality.
