Breast Reduction Surgery: What you need to know
Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgery that Dr Safvat performs regularly in all three locations – Miranda, Bowral and Concord. It is designed to reduce the size and weight of large breasts, alleviating the physical and emotional discomfort on the patient. Breast reduction surgery has one of the highest satisfaction rates and patients are very grateful and often mention that they wish they had had this procedure done sooner.
This surgery is usually performed for functional reasons but as a bonus, it also improves the aesthetic look of the breasts as well. If you would like more information on breast reduction, this article will guide you through the procedure and what you can expect.
Why Consider Breast Reduction?
For many women, having large breasts isn’t just about appearance—it can cause a range of physical and emotional challenges. Some of the most common reasons for undergoing breast reduction surgery include:
- Chronic Pain: Large breasts can contribute to back, neck, and shoulder pain, often leading to poor posture and discomfort in everyday activities.
- Postural Issues: The weight of large breasts can lead to poor posture and spinal problems over time.
- Skin Irritation: Many women experience skin rashes and irritation under the breasts due to constant rubbing and moisture. Grooving from bra straps is also common on the shoulder.
- Activity Restrictions: Physical activities, especially exercise, can be difficult and uncomfortable with large breasts, limiting the ability to stay active.
- Emotional Challenges: Large breasts can lead to unhappy feelings about the look of the breasts, social issues, and unwanted attention, which can affect mental well-being.
By reducing the size of the breasts, this surgery helps alleviate physical symptoms and allows women to feel more comfortable in their own bodies.
The Breast Reduction Procedure
Breast reduction surgery involves removing excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, reshaping the breasts to a smaller, more proportionate size and aesthetic position.
Dr Safvat uses the Supero-Medial Pedicle Technique which reshapes the breast tissue for long-lasting results, unlike the traditional Inferior Pedicle Technique, which relied on the skin to shape the breast and often stretched after six months to a year. These two techniques refer to the method of removing the excess breast tissue. In addition to breast tissue, excess skin is also removed. This is the scar that is visible after the surgery. Depending on the amount of skin that needs to be removed for each individual, Dr Safvat may use either the Anchor Technique (Inverted T-scar) or the Short Scar Technique (Lollipop scar), which involves placing the scar around the areola and vertically beneath it. Dr Safvat determines the most suitable technique based on each patient during consultation.
The surgery is performed under general anaesthetic and usually takes around 4-5 hours, depending on its complexity.
Recovery and Results
Initially, after breast reduction surgery, some pain, bruising and swelling is normal and expected. Pain can be easily managed with medication. The incision site initially will be raised, red and lumpy. This will settle over the next few months and Dr Safvat will guide you through his scar management protocol after your operation.
After breast reduction surgery, you are required to wear medical compression bras for up to six weeks. You will need 1-2 weeks off work (depending on the type of work you do). After around 6 weeks, almost all activities can usually be resumed.
Benefits of Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery can have a profound impact on your physical well-being. The key benefits include:
- Pain Relief: A significant reduction in back, neck, and shoulder pain is one of the most immediate and noticeable benefits.
- Improved Posture: Reducing the weight of the breasts helps improve posture and reduce the strain on your spine and muscles.
- Increased Mobility: Many women find that they are able to engage in physical activities like running, swimming, or yoga much more comfortably after surgery.
Is Breast Reduction Covered by Medicare?
In most cases, breast reduction surgery is considered medically necessary by Medicare. For instance, if you are suffering from chronic pain or physical symptoms that have not been relieved by other treatments, you may be eligible for a rebate under Medicare Item 45523. Dr Safvat will determine your eligibility during a consultation.
If you are eligible for the item number, then you will receive a small rebate from Medicare for Dr Safvat’s and the anaesthetist’s fee. Private health insurance (at the right level of cover) also contributes to some of the above costs and most of the hospital costs. Alternatively, you can have the procedure done as a self-funded patient in a private hospital.
Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction surgery is suitable for women who:
- Have disproportionately large breasts that cause physical discomfort.
- Are in good general health and maintain a stable weight.
- Do not smoke, as smoking can increase the risk of complications and hinder healing.
- Have realistic expectations about the surgery and its outcomes.
It is important to discuss your medical history, lifestyle, and goals with Dr Safvat to determine if breast reduction is the right option for you.
