Prominent Ears – Understanding Otoplasty Surgery (Ear Pinning Surgery)
Prominent or asymmetrical ears can be a source of self-consciousness for both children and adults. Otoplasty, commonly known as ear pinning surgery, is a procedure intended to improve the position of the ears, creating a more balanced appearance in relation to the face.
What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a surgical procedure that can be used to:
- Reduce the prominence of ears that protrude noticeably from the head
- Improve ear symmetry when one ear sits differently to the other
The procedure is tailored to each individual patient and Dr Safvat will determine the surgical approach depending on the specific anatomy and concerns being addressed.

When is Otoplasty Surgery Performed?
Many patients consider otoplasty because they are unhappy with the appearance of their ears or experience ongoing self-consciousness. For children, prominent ears can sometimes lead to unwanted attention or teasing during school years.
The surgery is often performed once the ears have reached close to adult size, which is typically from around 5–6 years of age. However, it can be done at any age after this as well.
Benefits of Otoplasty Surgery
The benefits of otoplasty vary between individuals and may include:
- Improved balance and proportion between the ears and facial features
- Reduced prominence of protruding ears
- Improved ear symmetry
- Improves self-consciousness about ear appearance
As with any surgical procedure, outcomes vary between patients. A consultation with a qualified Specialist Plastic Surgeon, such as Dr Safvat, is essential to determine whether the procedure is appropriate for your circumstances and to consider all the information.
Medicare and Health Fund Rebates
An important distinction exists between Otoplasty performed for patients under 18 years of age and those over 18 years of age.
Patients Under 18 Years of Age
When performed to correct prominent ears or certain ear deformities in patients under 18 years of age, Otoplasty is classified as a medically indicated procedure. In these circumstances, a Medicare rebate may be available, and patients with private health insurance may also receive benefits from their health fund, depending on their level of cover.
Patients Over 18 Years of Age
For adults, Otoplasty is considered a cosmetic procedure by Medicare and therefore rebates are not available, and private health insurance benefits do not apply.
The Ethique Plastic Surgery team will provide a thorough estimate of fees and rebates during your consultation.
