Upper Blepharoplasty: Functional Benefits Alongside Natural Aesthetic Outcomes

From a Medicare point of view, Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty is either done for functional reasons or cosmetic reasons. Obviously, any procedure that is deemed purely cosmetic will not have a Medicare item number attached to it. However, a significant number of patients that present for consultation are experiencing functional symptoms associated with their upper eyelids. These include visual field obstruction, upper eyelid heaviness, brow fatigue from compensatory frontalis overactivity, frontal headaches, difficulty reading, and issues with driving or screen use. Purely cosmetic reasons include appearing tired, aged, heavy around the eyes or difficulty applying makeup. Most patients have some degree of both. Upper Blepharoplasty involves careful excision of the redundant upper eyelid skin, a slither of the Orbicularis Occuli muscle with selective management of underlying fat where appropriate. In suitable patients, the procedure can significantly improve the superior visual field and reduce the sensation of heaviness around the eyes, while also delivering a more refreshed, rested and youthful appearance.
