Breast reduction is a significant surgical procedure. Risks, expected recovery, scarring, changes in sensation and possible effects on breastfeeding should be discussed with an appropriately qualified medical practitioner before deciding whether to proceed.
Scarring cannot be prevented completely and varies between patients. Incision patterns may include an inverted-T or short-scar approach, depending on the amount of skin and tissue to be removed and the surgical plan. Scar management and likely scar position are discussed during consultation and follow-up.
All surgery carries risks. These may include infection, bleeding, fluid accumulation, scarring, asymmetry, altered nipple sensation, changes to breastfeeding ability and the possibility of further treatment. Dr Safvat will discuss risks relevant to your individual circumstances.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight variation and ageing can affect breast size and shape after surgery. Breast reduction may affect nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed. These considerations should be discussed before deciding whether to proceed.
Breast reduction may have a Medicare item number for eligible patients. Private health insurance and hospital cover vary according to the policy and clinical circumstances. Detailed information about approximate fees is provided after consultation or by the Ethique team as part of the enquiry process.
